Your Carpet Served You Well, Now What?

Carpet Recycle Washington DCNothing lasts forever, and carpets are no exception to the rule!  Yes, it is true that the average life expectancy of a carpet can range anywhere from 3 years to 20+ years, multiple factors considered! A few of those determining factors include the initial quality of your carpet, its primary purpose, your professional carpet cleaning and maintenance schedule, etc., etc., etc.

Now, it is important to note that irrespective of how well you maintain your carpet(s) over the years, the latter is by no means exempt from the usual ‘wear and tear’, an unavoidable consequence of the daily grind! Obviously, the better you care for your carpet, the better the return on your initial investment!

So 20 years later…….. Your carpet, it is on its last leg! You can’t complain though! You took care of it and it took care of you and your entire family over the years. It has indisputably served you and your entire family well, now what?

Carpets can be recycled

Did you know that? That carpets can be recycled? Although, carpet recycling is not a novel trend, it is still far from being a beacon in the carpet industry.

The idea emerged in 2002, approximately 14 years ago when a group of individuals affiliated with government agencies, like the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as well as some independent carpet manufacturers convened to sign the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding for Carpet Stewardship). Their goal was to recycle 40% of carpets through 2012 as a circumvention against the latter finding its ways into landfills. In order to facilitate the initiative, the MOU founded Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE).

Benefit(s) of Carpet Recycling

Two words, ‘Go Green’! These days, most carpets are made from some kind of plastic material, like nylon, polyester or polypropylene. More often than not, when the carpets have ‘served their time’, they end up in landfills. As a matter of fact, millions of pounds of discarded carpets find their way in landfills each year! Since materials like polypropylene do not typically decompose, this becomes a burden on the environment, our environment!

By recycling carpets however, we essentially save water and energy because manufacturers reuse the same plastic materials to make other sustainable products, ranging from new carpets and floor tiles and coverings, to automotive parts and construction or insulation materials. In other words, carpet recycling converts a potential landfill liability into a raw material opportunity.
